Wayne Rooney says he played with a midfielder at Man Utd who was up there with Cristiano Ronaldo for ability

The former England captain worked with the likes of Harry Kane, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard at international level, while he worked with the likes of Robin van Persie, Carlos Tevez and Ryan Giggs at club level at Manchester United.

Speaking to The Overlap, Rooney was asked to name the best player he ever played with, and he gave an interesting answer.

Indeed, Rooney picked Cristiano Ronaldo as the best player he ever played with, but he did put Paul Scholes in the conversation alongside the Portuguese superstar.

Rooney spoke about the best player he ever worked with, naming Scholes and Ronaldo as the two best.

“The best player you ever played with?” Rooney was asked.

“I’d probably say on pure ability it’s Ronaldo, but then Scholesy as well, what Scholes brought to the team, but on ability it’s Ronaldo.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is another level

Paul Scholes is a Premier League great, but there’s no comparison between Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The midfielder was a fantastic player, but Ronaldo is a genuine one-of-a-kind athlete who has a claim to be the greatest player of all-time.

He’s scored more goals than almost anyone who’s ever laced up a pair of boots, and even now at almost 40 years old, he’s breaking goalscoring records in Saudi Arabia.

There aren’t many players in the history of the game who can come close to Ronaldo, and while Scholes was a fantastic footballer, even he would have to admit that Ronaldo is another level to almost anyone who has ever played in the Premier League.

Ronaldo is the best player Rooney has ever worked with, and while Scholes may be second-best, it’s a distant second-place.
